Outschool and Wyzant are both US-based online education platforms that function as marketplaces, connecting students and teachers. Classes are conducted online via video conferencing. Users can select teachers and courses based on their interests and reviews. Teachers determine course prices independently. Both platforms are focused on the English-speaking market.

However, Outschool (founded in 2015) is primarily aimed at children (ages 3–18) and is positioned as a replacement for or supplement to offline school. It offers group lessons in mini-class formats, focusing on school subjects, hobbies, interests and informal learning (games, art, science, etc.). Courses have a fixed curriculum and schedule. This means Outschool is more like an "online school with courses" than a tutoring service.

Wyzant (2005) is more focused on one-on-one tutoring, such as exam preparation or homework help. The service covers all ages and a wide range of academic and professional subjects. The one-on-one format allows for a more flexible schedule.
