Outschool and Preply are both online educational platforms/marketplaces connecting teachers/tutors and students. Both services offer live video lessons with a personalized approach and are aimed at the global market (classes are primarily taught in English). Teachers and students can choose their own schedule and subjects. Both platforms offer mobile apps for convenient access from anywhere.

But Outschool (founded in 2015) is an American platform focused on children and teens (ages 3–18). Classes are often held in small groups, rather than just one-on-one. It offers lessons on a wide variety of topics (including creative arts), not just academic subjects. But it also provides academic curriculum that allows to replace offline school completely. Teachers typically require more strict background check.

Preply (2012) is a Ukrainian service that specializes in individual 1-1 lessons, primarily on language learning ​​and academic subjects. It is aimed not only at children but also at adults. It offers a wider selection of languages ​​for instruction. The service uses machine learning algorithms to match students and tutors that takes into account suitable schedule and pace of classes. Preply operates on a subscription model, or in some cases, lesson packages.
