On-demand access to English tutors over video chat.
VIP Kid ($1.1B)
VIP Kid
VIPKid connects teachers in North America with children around the world for real-time English immersion learning online

Cambly and VIP Kid are both online English learning platforms that use video lessons and video chats with native speakers. They focus on speaking practice and motivation rather than on written assignments and offer a mobile app for suitable studying. Both services offer paid learning options only.

However, Cambly (founded in 2012) is an American service whose teachers are native English speakers (therefore, the requirements for teacher certification are less strict). It is more suitable for adult learners who want to improve their spoken English, prepare for interviews, social interactions. Version for kids (Cambly Kids) is offers as a complementary option. The service offers more flexible schedule: students can choose when to join and request on-demand lessons.

VIPKid (2014) is a Chinese service aimed at Chinese children (ages 4-12). The teachers are also primarily Chinese but there are also teachers from the US and Canada. Teachers are required to have a bachelor's degree and teaching experience or an ESL certificate. Learning takes place via one-on-one online lessons (approximately half an hour long). The curriculum is more structured (more suited to Chinese discipline). Due to Chinese regulations on educational platforms, the company periodically changes its rules.
