Skillshare ($136.8M)
Skillshare
Brilliant and Skillshare are both American online edtech platforms focused on self-learning: users choose their own topics, pace, time. Both use a subscription model - you pay a fixed monthly fee for access to any courses. Both platforms issue their own certificates, but do not provide official, accredited university-level degrees for most courses.

However, Brilliant (founded in 2012) focuses primarily on STEM subjects (math, science, computer science). Its priority is developing thinking and skills, rather than simply watching video lectures. Lessons on the platform are often interactive - visual challenges, feedback and a "learn-by-doing" approach. Content is often structured into learning paths from basic to advanced levels. Many courses are available for free.

Skillshare (founded in 2010) focuses on creative fields: design, illustration, photography, video and entrepreneurship. The platform is open to anyone who wants to become a teacher and publish their own course. But it places a strong emphasis on projects: participants complete assignments, create their own work and share it with the community. By the way, the community plays a significant role on Skillshare, there you can find help and motivation. The platform is suitable for both hobbies and professional development.
